Agility

Cast off! Navigating successfully in stormy times

One thing is very clear: business processes are accelerating increasingly, including product development, procurement, supply chains, marketing, sales, service. And beyond the business processes: fast food. Fast fashion. Fast economy. Are things hopeless?

Of course not, because every crisis offers new opportunities. Use the energy of the wind of change to put your company in a top position, because only the managers who drive their company to turn the cycle of agility faster and more effectively will become market leaders.

The renowned Harvard professor John P. Kotter, an expert in leadership and change management, is convinced that traditional management can neither use nor cope with the advantages of such an acceleration because it is simply too slow for it. Therefore, he recommends managing agility with a second, complementary management system.

At the heart of this second management system is the operational business plan, which includes the continuous adaptation initiatives. By implementing this plan in the Plan-Execute-Check (PEC) cycle, the company is transformed from traditional to agile business management. But beware: Agile project management differs from the agile management of a company in many ways.

Full speed ahead! Transform your leadership model now!

To put it bluntly: The transformation into agile corporate management does not mean setting up “10 golden rules” for the company that bore everyone and that will not be implemented anyway. Three steps are enough to redefine the leadership model. It is very important that you as a manager lead the way with your managers. You and your management team must want and execute the change yourself. Step by step.

Step 1

Assess the maturity of your leadership team

Together with your entire leadership team, evaluate the maturity of the agile leadership team in five stages: from Level 1 “Begins” to Level 2 “Presented”, Level 3 “Benefits”, Level 4 “Leads” and finally Level 5 “Teaching”.

Step 2

Focus on a single agility principle

Together, choose the agility principle for which the management team sees the greatest need for improvement. Then design a feasible transformation project for the next three months.

Step 3

Execute the transformation project

To implement the transformation sustainably, you should review progress frequently – at least every two weeks with the entire leadership team, or even better, every week. After three months, repeat the Agile Management Maturity Assessment and begin the next sprint of your agile transformation.

The course is set: Lead yourself!

In addition to many factors that are crucial for a successful transformation to agile corporate management, do not forget one aspect in particular: successful transformation only succeeds if you lead personally.

Make this transformation your own, declare it “my project” or “our project” – and don’t dream of delegating the transformation to agile leadership. The moment you delegate this transformation, it will come to a halt and the wind will be taken out of your sails.

You can now see what is important for successfully navigating your company. Don’t wait long to implement it, but start today, because there is no reason to wait!
